Movers and Shakers

January 05, 2018: Mover and Shaker:  Thulani "Tulz" Mangona - BIO

One of our very own, Eastern Cape singer, a well diverse musician Thulani “Tulz” Mangona

from Phakamisa Township aka Phabs – back in 2014 Tulz moved from just being a back-up vocalist,

after releasing his debut album as a solo artist.

After spending years as a back-up vocalist, Thulani launched his solo career and is now one of the

well-recognized Afro-pop/soul artists in the country. His debut single, Ndinohambo featuring

well-known Eastern Cape jazz musician Pu2ma Tiso has been in the airwaves ever since its debut in

2014, played on Umhlobo Wenene FM and other national stations.

Twish-La-Tweng fell in love with music while still at primary school, through his involvement with the

church. In 1996, in his Matric (Grade 12) year at Hector Petersen High Scholl in Zwelitsha, he was

discovered by music producer Sizwe Zako and things looked bright for his gospel boy band,

with award-winning gospel singer the late Lundi Tyamara (May his Soul Rest in Peace) and another

musician.

However, his parents insisted he rather focus on his schoolwork and pursue a corporate career.

“My family asked me to put music on hold and focus on building myself. After school I moved to

Johannesburg to work.” Tulz recalls.

He decided to do music part-time as a hobby and worked as a back-up vocalist for musicians like

Lundi and others under Tshepo Nzimande’s label “Zuzumuzi Music”. It was in 2011 that he decided to

pursue music full-time and work on his own project. He started writing Afro-soul songs and went into studio to record. He was later on signed by BM Entertainment Records. In his first album, he worked on collaborations with artists such as Pu2ma and DJ Ganyana. The rest is now history…

Late in 2017, Tulz registered his very own Independent label MANGONA MUSIC. WoW! What an achievement for this young man. We are therefore pleased to be one of the first platforms to announce that in 2018 Thulani will be releasing a new album under his own stable, marketed and distributed by Sheer/Universal Music. His debut video of Ndinohambo was played and continues to be played by the pay channel Mzansi Magic. Also in 2018, Tulz unomtyangampo nothotho (a line up) of International tours in Swaziland and Seychelles. It is with pleasure also to announce that the Buffalo City Municipality has informed his stable that Thulani will be part of the activities this year in the city.
